You get a refreshing look at what exactly would be happening if an alien ship did end up hovering over a major city. District 9 is a disturbing example of why any intelligent E.T. would never want to come to our planet in peace. Because let's face it people, the greeting they get in the movie would be dangerously close to the greeting they would get in reality. They would be quarantined, have their intelligence undermined, and last but not least, we would be salivating to find out if they had weapons and how we could use them for our own sick and twisted purposes. The moral message in District 9 is nothing like the one in Independence Day. (Run and hide!) It simply states that we as a race have a shallow and violent agenda, and any government who didn't possess those values would never get anywhere near the aliens. I personally thought the movie was an amazing, edge of the seat sci-fi thriller, with a subtle dose of empathy between man and alien. The visual and sound effects were splendid. The fact it was set in Johannesburg really opened doors to how a different culture than ours would react to such a phenomenon. And lastly all of the eye candy we were given on a $30 million dollar budget?-Please, somebody tell me where did they go wrong with the $235 million movie Waterworld?
